World in Action, “The Demonstration” – 40th Anniversary Screening

Talk Monday 17th March, 2008

Sunday 17 March 1968 saw the largest demonstration seen in Britain since before World War 2 as the 10,000-strong Vietnam Solidarity Campaign marched to the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square. There, what had started off as a peaceful protest descended into violence and mayhem and World in Action had six film crews on hand to document it all.

The team rushed back to Manchester where the resulting film was pieced together over the next 24 hours and finished just in time for the programme’s Monday evening slot, the next day.

The Demonstration was hailed as a groundbreaking piece of documentary television and won several awards including the Grand Prix at Cannes.
