Third Party Event: Reporting the UN in crisis: Archive film and discussion on the fairness and accuracy of media coverage.

Talk 29 November 2007

Held in association with the Institute of War and Peace Reporting and as part of the We the Peoples Film Festival, the presentation and discussion will assess how effectively the UN has adapted to media demands and contributed to a wider and better understanding of its work.

The UN has been dealing with crises since its inception and is best know for its ever expanding peacekeeping missions. Countless spokesmen, both civilian and military, have attempted to present UN policies, with varying success.

Ingrid Lehmann, a Communications expert whose book “Caught in the Crossfire – Peacekeeping and Public Information” accurately portrays the UN’s challenge, will be joined by journalists and experts on the subject. Film from the UN Archives, some publicly screened for the first time, will be used to illustrate the issues.

The We the Peoples Film Festival (29 November to 8 December) is being held in various venues in London. See www.wethepeoples.org.uk
