Insight with Tony Wood and Tom de Waal: Independence for Chechnya?

Talk Tuesday 10th April, 2007

Tony Wood, Assistant Editor at the New Left Review, and Tom de Waal, IWPR Caucasus Editor, discuss whether independence from Russia is the best way forward for Chechnya.

Tony Wood, author of Chechnya: Case for Independence (2007), has been following events in this war-torn region for many years. In his book he examines the relationship between Russia and Chechnya over the past century and a half and the fate of the region since the fall of the Soviet Union. He also looks at the role of radical Islam in the conflict.

Thomas de Waal is Caucasus Editor at the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. He worked in Moscow 1993-1997, for the Moscow Times, The Times (of London) and The Economist, during which he covered the outbreak, course and aftermath of the first Chechen war (1994-1996).
He is co-author with Carlotta Gall of Chechnya: A Small Victorious War (1997) and author of Black Garden: Armenia and Azerbaijan Through Peace and War (2003).
