Foreign Editors Roundtable: The Truth About Foreign News

Talk Thursday 19th April, 2007

Meet the UK’s leading newspaper foreign editors as they discuss breaking stories, the problems of reporting from war zones and the value of foreign news.

This is the first in a series of Frontline discussions with senior editors of leading newspapers, magazines, TV and radio programmes.

With British soldiers held hostage in Iran, Iraq on the brink of civil war, Afghanistan sliding into worsening conflict, the Darfur crisis and Mugabe’s last stand in Zimbabwe – how do foreign editors cope with trying to provide first-hand reporting on so many major international stories?

What about the readers? Are they interested in foreign stories or are they all caught up with domestic politics, the economy and celebrities?

Will multi-media journalism consign traditional newspapers to the dustbin of history?

Con Couglin – Executive Foreign Editor of the Daily Telegraph.

Leonard Doyle – Foreign Editor of The Independent.

Harriet Sherwood – Foreign Editor of The Guardian.

Moderated by John Owen – Chairman of the Frontline Forum.
