Workshop: WordPress for Journalists with co-founder Mike Little

From Spotify.com to Stephen Fry.com, more than 73 million websites and blogs across the globe are powered by WordPress. It has become the publishing platform de rigueur for a wide variety of individuals, organisations and government bodies.

Although it is quick and easy to install, it takes a bit of insight to make the most of this effective publishing engine. This workshop is designed to provide you with the skills you will need to power and develop your own WordPress site in order to exhibit your work, be that as a print journalist, broadcaster or film maker.

As the internet continues to govern our information channels, it is vital for freelance journalists to have an online presence and be able to showcase their work not only to potential commissioners but also to the public at large.

By the end of the day you will have mastered the journalism basics of WordPress and be in the position to start managing your own site. The workshop will cover:

Introduction To WordPress: What is WordPress?
A little history
Blogging and more
How wordPress is used in the News/Media

The WordPress Dashboard: Logging in and looking around

Settings: Configuring WordPress just how you want it

Content: Blog Posts, Pages and more

Publishing your first content: It's that easy!

Syndication: RSS - Feeds in, feeds out

Themes, and the look of your site: Some good themes and sources of more

Plugins: Adding more functionality
Some key plugins, SEO, security, and more

Comments: Engaging with your readers
Linking with the social media world

Multiple users: Co-authoring and workflow
Copyright and attribution

Although preferred, you need not already have a WordPress blog or website - example accounts will be accessible throughout the day and for a short period after the workshop, for you to experiment with. Should you wish to wish to download WordPress in advance, you can do so by clicking here.

You will need to bring with you a laptop with a Mac OS X, Linux or Windows operating system. You will also need a modern web browser pre-installed, we recommend Google Chrome or Safari however the latest editions of Internet Explorer or Opera will also work. (Please note that we are unable to provide hardware or software on the day).

It is always beneficial to work with your own media, so it is worth while bringing with you images and files of your work that you would like to upload to your new or existing site.

Trainer Bio: Mike Little is the co-founder of WordPress, and founder and CEO of zed1.com - a Wordpress specialist web development consultancy.
Two Day Workshop: Introduction to editing with Final Cut Pro X

Final Cut Pro X has redefined the post-production process for journalists and video professionals. Until now all non-linear editing systems were based on film editing.

FCP X works with new paradigms from tapeless workflows. This two day workshop will guide you through this revolutionary new way of editing by taking you through an edit from start to finish.

We'll look at how to import and organise your media, create a rough cut, trim and cut, add music/effects/titles and voice over, colour correct and export for multiple platforms.

Following on from the weekend will be a Storytelling for the Edit workshop that will help you to see storytelling from an editors perspective. This workshop is complementary, but not essential to the Introduction to Editing session.

Own laptops and editing media are optional, though desirable if you have access - we do not provide hardware or software in these workshops

Workflow

Importing / transcoding files,

Creating events,

Keywords,

Grouping clips

Reviewing media,

Marking.

Sequencing Clips

Magnetic timeline,

Adding clips to the timeline,

Clip timing,

Auditioning,

Story lines and compound clips.

Adjusting Video

Speed,

Scaling,

Cropping,

Distorting,

Keyframing.

Text

Music & Audio

Editing / Enhancement,

Recording V/O

Effects

Template effects,

Adjusting effects.

Colour correction,

Auto balancing / matching colour,

Manual correction.

Exporting

Quicktime / Apple devices / Vimeo / Youtube,

Compressor.

Trainer: Simon Ruben

Simon is an award winning freelance editor and video trainer with over seven years of broadcast experience across a range of genres.

Simon has designed and delivered popular courses for the Frontline Club since 2007 including Final Cut Pro, Compressor, DVDSP, Motion.
