Screening: Shorts at the Frontline Club

An evening of short documentaries from different parts of the world covering a wide range of topics, Shorts at the Frontline Club will showcase moving, striking and funny stories using different techniques.

There will be short stories capturing the essence of big issues; films showing life in other parts of the world under difficult or extraordinary circumstances; and stories focusing on one particular remarkable event or person.

Karama Has No Walls

Through the lenses of two cameramen and the accounts of two fathers, Karama Has No Walls retells the story of the people behind the statistics and news reports of the events that took place on the Friday of Dignity during the Yemeni revolution.

Directed by Sara Ishaq
Duration: 27'
Year: 2012

Leonids Story (Germany/Ukraine)

This magically animated film combines drawing, photography and documentary video to capture the surreal emotions of the too-real tragedy: Chernobyl1986. The events are told through a Soviet family whose search for a modest paradise is swept into an immense disaster.

Directed by Tetyana Chernyavska and Rainer Ludwigs
Duration: 19'
Year: 2011

Returns (PL)

On 10 April 2010, one of the most important dates in modern Polish history, 96 people, including the Polish president and government representatives died in a;plane crash near Smolensk. They were on their way to Russia to participate in a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, the mass murder of Polish officers carried out by the NKVD. Returns shows the preparations for the commemoration ceremony, resulting in a film as surreal as the events themselves.

Directed by Krzystof Kadlubowski
Duration: 7'
Year: 2010

Uravel (India/UK)

Unravel follows the Western worlds least wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India. With limited exposure to western culture, workers construct a picture of the West, using their imagination and the rumours that travel with the cast-offs.

Directed by Meghna Gupta
Duration: 14'
Year: 2012

Covering poverty in an indifferent world

In 1984 the world was shaken by the images of the famine in Ethiopia, described by Michael Buerk in his report for the BBC as "a biblical famine in the 20th Century" what followed was a global call to action. Live Aid organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure reached an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion and raised £150 million.

The images of the famine in Ethiopia were shocking, but nearly 30 years on, is the public immune to graphic imagery? How do you communicate poverty in the modern media landscape?

Much criticism has been levelled at Live Aid but there is no doubt that it galvanised a generation in a way that has not been done since. Join us as we discuss whether a message on poverty can harness global attention in a world more connected than ever before, and what the role of public figures should be.

With:

Jamie Drummond, co-founder and Executive Director of ONE, a grassroots advocacy and campaigning organisation that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support smart and effective policies and programs.

Screening: In the Shadow of the Sun + Q&A

Over 130 people with albinism have been brutally murdered or left mutilated in Tanzania since 2008, fuelled by a belief that albino body parts used in witchcraft will bring about prosperity and good fortune. While many people with albinism are killed at birth or rejected by their families, those who grow up risk being murdered every day of their life.

In the Shadow Of the Sun tells the story of two members of the Tanzanian Albino Society who follow their dreams in the face of prejudice and fear. Against the backdrop of an escalation in brutal murders, 15-year old Vedastus dreams of completing his education while no school can guarantee his safety. Josephat Torner has dedicated his life to campaigning against the discrimination. He stands and faces the killings head on, travelling through the country confronting communities who may be hiding the murderers.

Through an intimate portrait of Vedastus and Josephat Torner director Harry Freeland reveals a story of deep-rooted superstition, suffering and incredible strength.

Screening: Voice of a Nation - My Journey through Afghanistan + Q&A

Over the past 10 years director Jawed Taiman has travelled across Afghanistan, to find out about the real state of his homeland. He spoke to teachers in Bamyan, vendors of the Urdu Bazar in Kandahar, he met the Taliban in Herat, and traveled with the provincial governor of Ghor. Having gone through 3 decades of war, in Voice of a Nation, Taiman offers an Afghan perspective of these years and how they see their future?

Born in Afghanistan Taiman left his country as a child. While working on the film Addicted in Afghanistan he became aware of a difference between the news coverage about Afghanistan and the reality he was confronted with on the ground.

Through conversations with Afghan men, women, students, farmers, government employees, and even insurgents opposing the government Taiman captures their uncensored, honest opinions and views on their lives.

Directed by Jawed Taiman
Duration: 52'
Year: 2012

THIRD PARTY EVENT PhotoTALK with WPO: The funding game

Picture credit: Donald Weber / VII Photo

The Frontline Club is set to host the first event in a new World Photography Organisation series, PhotoTALK.

This PhotoTALK will provide insights into obtaining funding for photographic projects. Experts and practitioners will hit the key points about grants, bursaries, crowdfunding and more - what they mean, how to find funds and what to think about.

The discussion will cover how to consider formulating your work and vision to help fund your project, adopting a slightly different, carefully researched, way of thinking at the pre-production stage. Although often perceived as an impossible task, there are actually many places that are great for sourcing funding for photography.

Come and join the conversation with:

Canadian photographer Donald Weber, who recently won first prize in Current Affairs for the 2012 Sony World Photography Awards, and runs regular work shops on funding photographic projects.

Additional panelists to be confirmed.

The inequality debate

As emerging markets such as China and India grow, the gap in global inequality is narrowing. But within many of these countries and those that are more developed the gap between rich and poor is widening, in some countries to a shocking degree. In the US which has one of the highest levels of inequality in the West, the richest 10% of Americans receive about half of the nation's income.

In a time when economic growth is slowing and governments are advocating fiscal austerity, is the question of inequality being factored in to the equation? Join us as we discuss the problem of inequality globally, and how it can be tackled without hurting economic growth. We will be examining the detrimental effects of inequality of opportunity on social mobility and asking what should be done by governments to counter it.

Cruel Britannia: A Secret History of Torture

From the Second World War to the War on Terror, via Kenya and Northern Ireland award-winning investigative journalist Ian Cobain's new book Cruel Britannia explores Britain's role in the development and use of torture. Drawing on previously unseen official documents, and the accounts of witnesses, victims and experts Cobain reveals some stark truths.

With the High Court judgement that a group of Kenyans can claim damages from British government for abuses suffered during the Mau Mau rebellion, and on-going enquiries into the abuse of terror suspects, we will be joined by Cobain and a panel of experts to discuss Britain's record on involvement in the use of torture. We will be asking whether it is to time to challenge the official line that the UK does not 'participate in, solicit, encourage or condone' torture.

With:

Ian Cobain, an investigative jounrnalist with the Guardian and author of Cruel Britannia: A Secret History of Torture. His inquiries into the UK's involvement with torture since 9/11 have won the Martha Gellhorn Prize and the Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism, and has been shortlisted for the Orwell Prize. He has also won several Amnesty International Media awards and a Liberty award.

Clive Baldwin, the Senior Legal Advisor for the Legal and Policy office at Human Rights Watch, where he has been working on issues of international law since 2007. His areas of focus include the Middle East, north and west Africa and discrimination law.

Rt Hon David Davis MP, Member of Parliament for Haltemprice and Howden since 1997 and former Shadow Home Secretary. As a Minister in the last Conservative government he served in the Cabinet Office and the Foreign Office. In the latter, he was responsible for Security Policy and European Policy, overseeing the majority of the country's international negotiations.

BBC Middle East correspondent from 1995 and Middle East editor since 2005, award-winning journalist Jeremy Bowen has spent much of the past two years documenting the game-changing moments in the history of the Middle East. He will be joining us in conversation with Channel 4 News' International Editor Lindsey Hilsum to discuss this historic era, which he documents in his new book The Arab Uprisings: The People Want the Fall of the Regime.

Bowen will be reflecting on the extraordinary heady days of early 2011, talking about the thoughts and feelings of the people involved, and how different situations evolved in the varying countries touched by the uprisings. As well as describing the atmosphere on the ground he will give us an insight into the political context, history and the evolving landscape of the Middle East.

The future of fixers in foreign reporting

From Iraq to Afghanistan, Libya to Syria local fixers are increasingly being relied upon by journalists to help them get the story and do their jobs. For foreign journalists they provide essential local knowledge and the ability to communicate, but by doing so they often put themselves and their families in danger.

The uprisings in the Arab world, particularly in Libya, have put fresh scrutiny on the relationship between fixers and foreign journalists. We will be asking whether journalists are taking proper responsibility for their fixers.

Increasingly being used as an editorial resource to offer a local perspective, we will be examining the problems that arise from this and the role of fixers in the future of foreign reporting.

With:

Ilene Prusher, independent journalist based in Jerusalem and author of Baghdad Fixer. Prusher has covered some 30 countries in the course of her career as a foreign correspondent. She was a staff writer for The Christian Science Monitor from 2000 to 2010, serving as the bureau chief in Tokyo, Istanbul, and Jerusalem and covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Patrick Cockburn, senior Middle East correspondent since 1979 for the Financial Times and, presently, The Independent. He is an experienced commentator on Iraq and has written several books on the country including The Occupation: War and Resistance in Iraq and Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia Revival, and the Struggle for Iraq.

Charles Glass, a broadcaster, journalist and writer, who began his journalistic career in 1973 at the ABC News Beirut bureau and was chief Middle East correspondent from 1983 to 1993. Since then, he has been a freelance writer, regularly covering the Middle East, the Balkans, Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean region. He has also published books, short stories, essays and articles in the United States and Europe.

Screening: Land Rush + debate

Can the world feed itself? When the food system began falling apart in 2008, rich countries started buying up and leasing fertile tracks of the developing world. In 2009 alone, nearly 60 million hectares - an area the size of France - was purchased or leased in Africa.

In Land Rush directors Hugo Berkeley and Osvalde Lewat look at the situation in Mali where 75% of the population are farmers, but rich, land-hungry nations like China and Saudi Arabia are leasing land in order to turn large areas into agribusiness farms. American sugar developer Mima Nedelcovych's wants to deliver change through his ambitious scheme, Sosumar. Unlike some of his competitors he considers the involvement of the local communities as key to the project's success. However, many in the community remain unconvinced and see the plantation as nothing short of a neo-colonial outpost.

As Mali experiences a military coup, the developers are scared off - but can Mali's farmers combat food shortages and escape poverty on their own terms?

Screening: Education, Education + debate

Just over fifteen years ago a major change in China's society took place, the commercialisation of higher education. The Chinese government continues to tell its citizens that the country is a meritocracy where individuals' best efforts will contribute to the overall success of nation and party. However, the industrialisation of education has dramatically changed the situation, freezing social mobility and leaving many Chinese people with no way of changing their lives.

In Education, Education director Weijun Chen looks at Chinese education system through the lives of Wang Zehziang, a tutor at the private Hongbo Education college; Wang Pan, a high school graduate and would be student; and Wan Chao, a graduate job seeker who goes from one unpromising interview to another.

The lives of these three young Chinese show a reality in which good grades, confidence and ambition are not enough to secure a salary that will cover the cost of living, let alone pay off any undergraduate debt and where offering worthless diplomas has become a lucrative business for private colleges.

First Wednesday: Trouble at the BBC - Savile, management and public trust

The last time the BBC set up an internal inquiry of the scale of the Pollard Inquiry it resulted in a shake up that saw the resignation of the Director General and the Chairman. Nearly ten years on from the Hutton Inquiry pressure is again mounting at the BBC and there are calls for those at the top to "fall on their swords".

Join us as we ask whether the criticism levelled at the BBC and its management is fair and how damaging it could be. Does the failure to adequately justify and explain the reasons for dropping the Newsnight investigation into Jimmy Savile's past point to a larger problem with decision-making at the BBC?

Screening: The Mexican Suitcase + Q&A

In the chaos caused by the beginning of World War II in Europe, three small boxes disappeared to be found again in a closet in Mexico City in 2007. They contained 4,500 unique negatives, the work of three friends; Robert Capa, David "Chim" Seymour and Gerda Taro.

Exiled from their respective countries they were committed anti-fascists and travelled to Spain to fight the rise of Franco with their cameras. Their vivid frontline photography captured the brutal realities of the Spanish Civil War.The Mexican Suitcase reveals the journey these lost negatives made from France to Mexico and tells the story of their recovery 70 years later.

By putting the photographs in the context of the Spanish Civil War and the exiled community in Mexico, director Trisha Ziff looks at the power of memory and how it relates to history, questioning who owns memories and who has the power to define popular narratives.
